America's premier 2-seater sports car featuring a new fuel injected 283 cubic inch engine producing up to 283 horsepower and a four speed transmission. Both a folding soft top or a removable hardtop were available. Only 6,339 were manufactured.

In 1955, the first 2-seater sports car from Ford featured automatic transmission and power steering plus a new 292 cid overhead valve V8 engine that produced 198 bhp. Many came with either a convertible soft-top or a removable fiberglass hard top.  A hood bulge was needed to clear the air cleaner. Exhaust outlets were built into the bumper guards. Prices began at $2944.00. The 1957 Thunderbird represented the first significant restyling for the sporty 2-seater. It included a combination bumper/grille. An angled fin design gave the car a sleeker look. A port-holed hardtop remained optional, as did the outside tire. The standard spare moved into the trunk as a redesigned rear section provided more storage room.
